Meth myths

By Nicole Stricker • nstricker@postregister.com

Meth destroys teeth, causing “meth mouth.”

True. Meth has harsh chemicals that aren’t good for teeth and dries out the mouth, removing the saliva that protects against cavities. It also constricts blood vessels that irrigate the teeth and it stays in the system longer than other drugs with the same effect. Plus, meth addicts eat almost nothing but sweets.

People have to want treatment to succeed.

False. Addicts must stick with treatment for it to work, but many people don’t get help until they’re forced by embarrassment, unemployment or threat of prison. Pressure from friends, family, law enforcement or employers can help people stick with treatment, which improves their odds of success.

Drug addiction is a failure of will.

False. Although drug addiction starts with a voluntary behavior and a conscious choice, repeated use leads to addiction. Addiction is a brain disorder that drives addicts to keep using. Few can stop without professional treatment.
